Freaky Fruit Platter Recipe

Introduction

This Freaky Fruit Platter is a fun and spooky way to serve fruit for Halloween or any festive occasion. With creative touches like mummy bananas and grape snakes, it’s as visually exciting as it is delicious. Perfect for kids and adults alike, it turns healthy snacks into a playful treat.

A round white plate on a white marbled surface shows an arrangement of small Halloween-themed fruit snacks. At the center top, there are five small peeled oranges with green stems placed close together, creating a bright orange cluster. Below the oranges on the left side, many dark blueberries are scattered around white peeled lychees, each lychee with a blueberry on top and an edible eye. Nearby, there are red apple slices stacked in pairs with white almond slices inside, forming open mouths with teeth. On the right side, clusters of green and dark grapes are grouped, each grape with an edible eye, giving a playful look. At the bottom of the plate, four mummy-shaped snacks wrapped in white dough with googly eyes are placed, completing the Halloween-themed snack display. Photo taken with an iphone --ar 4:5 --v 7

Ingredients

  • 70g white chocolate, plus extra for sticking on the eyeballs
  • 3 small bananas, peeled and cut in half crosswise
  • Eyeball cake decorations or black writing icing or edible ink pen
  • Small piece of celery
  • 6 small tangerines, peeled
  • 1 red apple, cored and cut into 6 wedges
  • 2 tbsp nut butter (we used almond)
  • 25g yogurt-coated raisins
  • 425g can lychees in juice, drained
  • 150g blueberries
  • 250g black and green grapes
  • Short wooden skewers

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Melt the 70g white chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water or in the microwave in 20-second bursts. Allow the chocolate to cool to room temperature.
  2. Step 2: Place the banana halves on a tray lined with baking parchment. Drizzle the cooled chocolate over the bananas in a criss-cross pattern to create “bandages.” Attach eyeball decorations or draw eyes with black icing or an edible ink pen. Chill the bananas for about 30 minutes until set.
  3. Step 3: For the tangerine pumpkins, cut tiny stalks from the celery piece and insert them into the tops of the tangerines where the segments meet to resemble pumpkin stems.
  4. Step 4: Create apple fangs by cutting a small wedge from the peel side of each apple wedge to form “lips.” Fill the mouth area with nut butter and press yogurt-coated raisins into the nut butter to mimic wonky teeth.
  5. Step 5: For lychee eyeballs, stuff each drained lychee with a blueberry. Attach eyeball decorations onto the blueberry using some of the melted white chocolate or skewer the lychee and blueberry together. Optionally, drop these into a punch bowl for a spooky effect.
  6. Step 6: Make grape snakes by threading alternating green and black grapes onto short wooden skewers. Stick on eyeball decorations with white chocolate as done in step five.
  7. Step 7: Arrange all the prepared fruit creations on a large serving platter. Fill any gaps with leftover blueberries and decorate with spooky Halloween figures if desired.

Tips & Variations

  • Use clear white chocolate buttons for easier melting and smoother drizzling on the bananas.
  • Substitute nut butter with sunflower seed butter for a nut-free alternative.
  • If you can’t find eyeball decorations, use small edible sugar pearls and an edible marker to draw pupils.
  • Freshen cut apple wedges in lemon water to prevent browning before assembling.

Storage

Store the assembled fruit platter covered in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. The bananas are best eaten the same day as they start to discolor after a couple of hours. If refrigerated, bring the platter to room temperature for 10–15 minutes before serving to enjoy the best flavor and texture.

How to Serve

A round white plate is arranged with five peeled mini orange pumpkins on the top center, each showing the bright orange skin and green stem. To the left of the pumpkins, there are clusters of dark grapes and peeled lychee fruits, each lychee holding a small black and white candy eyeball on top. Below those, sliced red apple halves are placed with white almond slivers set inside them to look like teeth, creating mouths. To the right side of the plate, green and black grapes are stacked alternating and decorated with the same candy eyeballs to look like creatures. At the bottom edge, four small wrapped treat shapes covered in light-colored strips with candy eyes resemble mummies. The plate sits on a white marbled textured surface. photo taken with an iphone --ar 4:5 --v 7

  • 250g black and green grapes

Other

  • small piece of celery
  • 2 tbsp nut butter (we used almond)
  • 25g yogurt-coated raisins
  • short wooden skewers

Instructions

  1. Prepare the mummy bananas: Melt the white chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water or in the microwave in 20-second bursts, then cool it to room temperature. Place banana halves on a tray lined with baking parchment and drizzle the melted chocolate in a criss-cross pattern to mimic bandages. Attach eyeball decorations or draw eyes with black writing icing or edible ink pen. Chill for about 30 minutes until set, noting the bananas will start to discolor after 2 hours.

  4. Assemble the lychee eyeballs: Stuff each drained lychee with a blueberry. Use some melted white chocolate from step one to stick the eyeball decorations onto the blueberry or skewer the fruits together. Optionally, these can be added to a punch bowl.
  5. Construct the grape snakes: Thread alternating black and green grapes onto short wooden skewers. Attach eyeball decorations using white chocolate as adhesive, similar to the lychee eyeballs.
