Ingredients
Chocolate and Decorations
- 70g white chocolate, plus extra for sticking on the eyeballs
- eyeball cake decorations or black writing icing or edible ink pen
Fruit
- 3 small bananas, peeled and cut in half crosswise
- 6 small tangerines, peeled
- 1 red apple, cored and cut into 6 wedges
- 425g can lychees in juice, drained
- 150g blueberries
- 250g black and green grapes
Other
- small piece of celery
- 2 tbsp nut butter (we used almond)
- 25g yogurt-coated raisins
- short wooden skewers
Instructions
- Prepare the mummy bananas: Melt the white chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water or in the microwave in 20-second bursts, then cool it to room temperature. Place banana halves on a tray lined with baking parchment and drizzle the melted chocolate in a criss-cross pattern to mimic bandages. Attach eyeball decorations or draw eyes with black writing icing or edible ink pen. Chill for about 30 minutes until set, noting the bananas will start to discolor after 2 hours.
- Make the tangerine pumpkins: Cut tiny stalks from a small piece of celery and insert them into the tops of the peeled tangerines where the segments meet, creating pumpkin stems.
- Create the apple fangs: Cut a small wedge from the peel side of each apple wedge to form lips. Fill this ‘mouth’ cavity with nut butter, then press yogurt-coated raisins into the nut butter to simulate wonky teeth.
- Assemble the lychee eyeballs: Stuff each drained lychee with a blueberry. Use some melted white chocolate from step one to stick the eyeball decorations onto the blueberry or skewer the fruits together. Optionally, these can be added to a punch bowl.
- Construct the grape snakes: Thread alternating black and green grapes onto short wooden skewers. Attach eyeball decorations using white chocolate as adhesive, similar to the lychee eyeballs.
- Arrange the platter: Arrange all the decorated fruits on a large serving platter. Fill any gaps with leftover blueberries and optionally decorate with spooky Halloween figures or additional decorations.
Notes
- Use fresh fruit for best appearance and taste; bananas may discolor after 2 hours, so prepare close to serving time.
- Substitute almond nut butter with other nut butters if desired, considering allergies.
- Melt chocolate gently to prevent burning and achieve smooth drizzling consistency.
- These spooky fruit ideas can be adapted with other fruits or decorations for variety.
