  • Author: Luna
  • Total Time: 15 minutes
  • Yield: 8 sandwiches 1x
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

Horse Head Sandwich Cutouts are fun, creative, and kid-friendly sandwiches shaped like horse heads. Made from soft sandwich bread with layers of mild cheddar cheese, deli turkey or ham (optional), and cream cheese, these delightful sandwiches are decorated with black olives for eyes and nostrils and julienned carrot strips as the mane. Ideal for lunchboxes or themed parties, they combine simple ingredients with playful presentation.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread & Spreads

  • 8 slices soft whole wheat or white sandwich bread
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise or butter, optional for spreading
  • 4 tablespoons cream cheese, softened

Filling

  • 4 slices mild cheddar cheese
  • 4 slices deli turkey or ham, optional (substitute with cucumber slices for vegetarian)

Decorations

  • 8 small black olives (for eyes and nostrils)
  • 1 small carrot, julienned (for mane)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bread: Lay out the bread slices on a clean surface and, if desired, lightly spread mayonnaise or butter on each slice to add moisture and flavor.
  2. Cut Horse Head Shapes: Use a horse head-shaped cookie cutter to cut 8 horse head shapes from the prepared bread slices, ensuring clean and even shapes for easier assembly.
  3. Assemble Filling: Take one bread cutout and layer a slice of mild cheddar cheese and a slice of deli turkey, ham, or cucumber if vegetarian. On the inside of the top bread cutout, spread cream cheese evenly.
  4. Form Sandwiches: Place the top bread cutout with cream cheese over the filled bottom cutout to create a sandwich, pressing gently to hold the filling in place.
  5. Decorate Faces: Using small pieces of black olive, create the eyes and nostrils on each sandwich. Use a small dab of cream cheese as edible glue if needed to keep the olives in place.
  6. Add Manes: Arrange the julienned carrot strips along the neck or head portion of the sandwich cutouts to represent the horse’s mane, giving them a colorful and playful finish.
  7. Pack and Serve: Handle the sandwiches carefully to maintain their shape and pack them into lunchboxes or serving plates securely. They are ready to serve immediately or to be enjoyed later as a fun snack or meal.

Notes

  • Use soft sandwich bread for easier cutting and better texture.
  • For a vegetarian alternative, replace deli meat with cucumber slices or another preferred vegetable.
  • Julienned carrots can be prepared ahead of time and stored in water to keep them crisp.
  • These sandwiches are best eaten fresh to maintain the shape and texture.
  • Mayonnaise or butter spreading is optional but adds moisture and flavor.
