Skillet Lasagna Recipe

  • Author: Luna
  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 4-6 servings 1x

Description

A hearty and delicious Skillet Lasagna combining ground beef, sausage, and a rich tomato sauce with creamy ricotta and melted mozzarella. This recipe simplifies traditional lasagna by cooking most components in a skillet before finishing under the broiler for a bubbly, golden cheese topping.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat and Vegetables

  • ½ lb. ground beef
  • ½ lb. ground sausage
  • 1 small yellow onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

Seasonings and Sauces

  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste

Thickener and Liquids

  • 3 tablespoons flour (optional, helps thicken the sauce)
  • 1 ½ cups beef broth
  • 16 oz. tomato sauce

Dairy

  • ½ cup ricotta cheese
  • 2 ½ cups fresh low moisture mozzarella, shredded

Pasta

  • ½ pound Campanelle pasta (can substitute bowtie pasta)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 500°F to prepare for the cheese browning stage at the end of cooking.
  2. Cook Meats and Onions: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook and crumble the ground beef and sausage together. Halfway through cooking, add diced onions and continue to cook until softened. Drain excess grease from the skillet.
  3. Add Garlic: Stir in minced garlic and cook for about 1 minute until fragrant but not browned.
  4. Season and Thicken: Sprinkle in salt, dried oregano, dried basil, and tomato paste. Add flour if using to thicken the sauce. Stir everything together and cook for 2 more minutes to eliminate the raw flour taste.
  5. Deglaze and Add Liquids: Pour in beef broth and use a silicone spatula to scrape and loosen any browned bits from the bottom and sides of the skillet to enhance flavor.
  6. Add Tomato Sauce and Simmer: Stir in the tomato sauce and bring the mixture to a boil. Once boiling, reduce heat to a gentle simmer.
  7. Incorporate Ricotta: Mix ricotta cheese into the sauce until well combined, creating a creamy texture.
  8. Cook Pasta: Meanwhile, bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add pasta and cook according to package instructions, approximately 10 minutes, until al dente. Drain well.
  9. Combine Pasta and Sauce: Add the drained pasta directly into the skillet sauce and stir to coat evenly.
  10. Prepare for Baking: If your skillet is not oven safe, transfer the pasta mixture to a lightly greased 9 x 13-inch casserole dish.
  11. Bake with Cheese: Top the pasta with shredded mozzarella cheese and bake uncovered in the preheated oven until the cheese is melted and starts to brown, about 8-10 minutes. Watch carefully to avoid burning.
  12. Garnish and Serve: Garnish with fresh parsley and serve hot, ideally alongside garlic bread with cheese for a complete meal.

Notes

  • Using flour to thicken the sauce is optional but recommended for a richer texture.
  • Campanelle pasta can be substituted with bowtie pasta or any other short pasta shape.
  • If your skillet is oven-safe, you can bake the lasagna directly in it to reduce cleanup.
  • Keep a close eye on the cheese while baking to prevent it from burning.
  • For a spicier flavor, add crushed red pepper flakes along with the herbs.
  • Leftovers store well and taste great reheated the next day.
